If- like most people- you have been raised eating animal products, the switch to veganism can be a shock to the system. There can also be a lot of pressure to become a particular ‘type’ of vegan: whether it’s ‘clean’, ‘raw’, ‘high carb low fat’ or some other diet that looks good on Instagram, these extra pressures can make transitioning to veganism seem unattainable.
But Greedy Lama thinks we should be kind to ourselves, and stocks the products that will make transitioning to a delicious plant-based diet easier than you ever thought possible. Here are our top 5 essentials that are just as tasty- nay, tastier- as the non-vegan foods you’ve always enjoyed. ‘Let them eat cake!’, but also lattes, cheesy pasta, and lots of other stuff...
- ‘Oatly’ oat milk
Slowly surpassing almond milk as King of the vegan ‘mylks’, oat milk is a wonderful, sweet, ridiculously healthy plant-based drink. Oatly is so nice, that we’re not quite sure how it can be made of pretty much just oats and water alone (it is- we checked). We love it on oat milk lattes and milky chai tea, as well as splashed over granola. You’ll never want udder juice again.
- ‘Engevita’ nutritional yeast
There may come a day when the notion of cheese stops entering your consciousness. But in the early days of veganism, you’ll look at your over-sized heap of tomato-saucy pasta, and you’ll feel like there’s something missing. This is one of the many occasions in your vegan life when nutritional yeast flakes- in spite of their mildly unappetising name- will save the day. Sprinkle liberally on just about anything for that cheesy, savoury taste, and feel smug about all the B12 and other health benefits that you’re getting as an added bonus.
- ‘Against the Grain’ choc-chip and hazelnut cookies
Remember that oat milk latte we talked about? Well sometimes, you’ll need a cheeky biscuit on the side. Whilst there are some good ‘accidentally vegan’ biccies out there (namely, oreos), these chunky hazelnut cookies are our favourite, both for their undeniable tastiness, and stellar dunking credentials.
- ‘Biona’ jackfruit pieces
If you start hankering after something to get your teeth into, jackfruit is a great and completely natural ingredient to chuck into your signature curry in place of meat. It has the texture of tender pulled pork, and takes on flavours really well. It sounds a little unusual, but just treat it as you would any meat in a curry or tagine recipe, and we promise that it will fill the void.
- ‘Eat real’ cream and chive quinoa crisps
Our final top product for newbies is another one that will satisfy those cheese cravings. It’s scientifically evidenced by Yale scientists that cheese triggers the same part of the brain as hard drugs, and so can be really addictive- so don’t feel bad about those cravings! Instead, counteract them with these cheesy crisps, that are like a posh, healthy version of cheesy Pringles.
